Uganda nuclear plans with China

On May 11, Wang Shoujun, chairman of China National Nuclear Corporation, met with Irene Muloni, Minister of Energy and Mineral Development.

Wang Shoujun introduced the complete supply chain of CNNC, the construction of Hualong No. 1 and the development of overseas markets. He highlighted CNNC’s capabilities in the application of nuclear technology, new energy development, and engineering construction and is greatly willing to share technology and experience to help Uganda increase infrastructure capabilities.

Minister Muloni introduced long-term energy development plan that includes nuclear and welcomes the investment of CNNC in Uganda.

After the meeting, the two sides signed “MOU on Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy Cooperation” and will give priority to promoting cooperation in the application of nuclear technology in medicine, agriculture and the industry.

Irene Muloni is graduated with an honours Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSc.E.Eng) degree from Makerere University, the oldest university in East Africa, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA), from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. She is also a Certified Public-Private Partnership Specialist, accredited by The Institute for Public-Private Partnerships, Inc. (IP3) and the Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) of Loughborough University.

From 2002 until 2011, Irene Muloni worked as the Managing Director of the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), a Ugandan parastatal company, responsible for distribution of electrical power to both commercial and retail customers nationwide. On 27 May 2011, she was appointed Minister of Energy & Minerals, by President Yoweri Museveni.
