Six conditions to achieve energy self-sufficiency for Iraq

The official spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Musa Al-Abadi, stated that there are 6 factors that must be met in order for Iraq to be able to achieve energy self-sufficiency.

Al-Abadi defined the following factors for Iraq’s Electricity to reach the stage of energy self-sufficiency:

  • A fully-fledged ministry;
  • Global contracts;
  • Partnership with the private sector;
  • A timeframe limits of 3 – 4 years;
  • Ensuring a fuel plan that requires the rehabilitation of gas pipelines and fields;
  • Generally favorable and suitable conditions.

Al-Abadi said that the electrical linking projects with the neighboring countries are still going on, but the global health situation and the economic situation, resulting from the fallout of oil prices, in addition to not approving a general budgetary for the state, makes it imperative for the electricity to perform a comprehensive review of all its plans and projects in light of the emerging changes.
