Palestine signs Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement with IAEA

The Ambassador of Palestine to Austria, Permanent Observer to the United Nations and International Organizations in Vienna, Salah Abd Al-Shafi, on Tuesday, 18 June, signed a comprehensive safeguards agreement between Palestine and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Under this agreement, IAEA inspectors are entitled to carry out inspections and investigations in the State of Palestine to ensure the peaceful uses of atomic energy. For its part, Palestine should provide a complete inventory of all uses of radioactive materials in all sectors of health, agriculture, science, and research.

The signing of the agreement, which was signed by the Agency’s Director-General, Yukiya Amano, after the accession of Palestine as a State party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in early 2015.

The ambassador conveyed the greetings of President Mahmoud Abbas and Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki, stressing that the signing of this agreement is further proof that the State of Palestine holds its international responsibilities as an active member of the international community. For his part, Director-General Amano stressed the Agency’s readiness to continue to provide technical assistance to the State of Palestine.
