Likhachev: building trust between Russia and Turkey for Akkuyu

“The only way to build and grow Akkuyu NGS is a well-coordinated and trust-based business association between the Russian and Turkish sides,” said Likhachev, President of the Russian State Nuclear Energy Authority Rosatom.

Cengiz Holding, which has a 49 percent share of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NGS), emphasizes that they have executed a successful business alliance with the Kalyon Construction and Kolin Construction Consortium.

Likhachev, who stated that Turkish construction companies and workers have an important reputation with their projects in Russia, added: “Of course we will continue to work with Turkish investors.” There are many alternatives we have considered in this matter, but final decisions have not yet been made and we are still assessing the Turkish companies”.

Akkuyu stated that the connection to the grid by 2023 is an ambitious target and that “the equipment installation and construction processes must be carried out very carefully.” Akkuyu works with all the efforts of Russia and Turkey to train NGS personnel. It is a well-coordinated and trust-based business association between both sides.

Likhachev stated that Akkuyu NGS is understood by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources in specific issues and stated that “The limited working permit for Akkuyu in this agreement was given on October 20, 2017 so we started some concrete works on the basis of the project” .

Likhachev hopes to get all the necessary licenses in this first quarter of 2018 to start working on the concrete of the first reactors. The Turkish partners give great importance to localization in the investments to be realized this year and there are important Turkish companies that can help us in this”.
