Jordan declined an agreement with Rosatom

The Jordanian Atomic Energy Commission just declared that the Russian side appealed to Amman to take loans from commercial banks for the implementation of the project, after which it was decided to cancel the agreement with Rosatom on the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Jordan.

On June 1, the media reported that Jordan abandoned the construction project, in which Rosatom takes part. The project concerned the construction of the first nuclear power plant on the territory of Jordan with large capacity indicators worth ten billion dollars. After the refusal during the next few days, a new agreement was signed between Russia and Jordan on the construction of the nuclear power unit, but only with less power. At the same time, the project for construction will be used by the Russian.

The communique wrote that after the Russian side asked to pay for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Jordan by commercial banks, Jordan decided to terminate the agreement that was signed with the Russian company Rosatom.

The Jordanian Commission gave its explanation that the request of the Russian side to sign a final agreement with the point of repayment of loans by commercial banks will significantly increase the cost of the project, therefore, as a result, electricity in the market will be several times more expensive, and the government of Jordan cannot go to such a step.

The Jordanian government noted that the increase in construction costs is unacceptable, since after the construction of the nuclear power plant the price of electricity will be uncompetitive in the market compared to other sources.

Recall that in 2015, Jordan and Russia agreed to build the first nuclear power plant in the territory of Jordan, which will include two powerful power units (2,000 megawatts). According to preliminary estimates, the total cost of construction is $ 10 Billion. The first power unit was planned for launch by the beginning of 2020.
