The Emirates nuclear energy organization, announced the completion of the initial construction of the first nuclear plant in Barakah, Al Dhafra Region in Abu Dhabi, and handing over the  plant systems to the Korean Hydro and Nuclear Power Company (KHNP) for testing before launching operations.

Eng. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, CEO of Emirates nuclear energy organization, declared: “The completion of the initial construction operations and the handover of all the reactor systems for the first plant is a great accomplishment in this important project to diversify the country’s energy resources. It is a proof we can meet the highest standards of quality and safety, which reflects the professionalism and dedication of all in this project ”

ENEC also announced modifications in the timetable regarding the operation of the first nuclear power plant. The modification of the timetable includes postponement of launching date for the first plant from 2017 to be in 2018 to guarantee enough time for conducting international assessments, and adherence to the highest international safety standards, as well as boosting the operational efficiency of the plant and its operators – according to the statement.

The organization pointed that the project of the Emirate’s nuclear power project for peaceful use in Baraka is the first site in the world where four identical nuclear plants are being built at the same time. The construction operations of the first plant started in 2012, Emirates nuclear energy organization will provide 25% of the UAE’s low-carbon electricity needs.
