Akkuyu will reduce Turkey’s dependence on foreign sources

Fatih Dönmez, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, met with 22 Turkish students from Mephi, that will become the operators of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant. Among the students, 13 are in the field of thermo-hydraulic and 9 in electrical engineering. They are being sent to St. Petersburg Polytechnic University for further education.

Dönmez pointed out that half of Turkey’s electricity production is dependent from foreign supply. The country pays $ 40 billion as the average energy resources every year and needs to increase the use of domestic resources. The Minister indicated that Turkey sees nuclear as the leading source of clean electricity generation, energy independence, and advanced technology in numerous areas from health to communication.
